About the Project

The Interreg IPA CBC Programme ”Greece – Republic of North Macedonia  2014-2020” is a cross-border cooperation Programme co-financed by the European Union under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA II). The strategy statement of the Programme is “to enhance territorial cohesion by improving living standards and employment opportunities holding respect to the environment and by using the natural resources for upgrading of the tourism product”. The total budget of the Programme for the period 2014-2020 is €45.470.066,00.

I-TOUR engages broad platform of public, private, civil, academia and media stakeholders in tackling the problem of non-existing cross border sustainable and competitive tourism product. Cross border regions Pelagonija, Florina and Thessaloniki pose abundance of natural, anthropological and cultural assets that remain relatively unknown to domestic and foreign potential tourists. Overall objective of the project is to contribute to improve the overall development of the cross-border regions Pelagonija, Florina and Thessaloniki by enhanced and sustainable utilization of their tourism potentials. I-TOUR for the first time will map all tourism potentials, develop, evaluate, improve and promote a cross border tourism products ready to be marketed at domestic and international market. Main outputs of the project will be three cross border adventure tourism products developed, tested, evaluated by cross-border tourist and nationally and internationally promoted.

Who are the beneficiaries?

Benefit from the project will have at least 400.000 citizens in Pelagonija, Florina and Thessaloniki region, out of which at least 30.000 live in rural areas. In the tourism sector project beneficiaries will includes at least 100 service providers, 10 tour operators, 15 local self-government units, 50 civil organizations, 3 cultural preservation institutions and 5 protected areas. I-TOUR approach will give strong value on inclusion of all tourism sector stakeholders including municipalities, regions, faculties, hotels, motels, B&Bs, tour operators, tour guides, protected areas, cultural institutions at the same time foreseeing clear-cut interventions into tourism product itself.

Project activities have effect on the territory of Pelagonija region (municipalities Bitola, Prilep, Resen, Krusevo, Demir Hisar, Novaci, Mogila, Krivogastani and Dolneni), region of Florina and region of Thessaloniki. All project regions have active rural communities which keep the tradition as it was centuries ago, but still strive for better local economy. Also, project activities will geographically target National park Prespa and National park Pelister. Faculty for tourism and hospitality of Ohrid, being located in an internationally developed tourism area will provide extra knowledge on competitive tourism product development and sustainable tourism potentials utilization. Entire target area of the project neighbors across one state border.

Target area of the project abundance with tourism potentials: more than 500 archaeological sites, more than 20 active and attractive villages, dozens of protected sites, natural lakes, rare biodiversity, flora and fauna, and citizens with hospitable manners. Project area also comprehends large cities (Thessaloniki, Bitola, Ohrid) excellent road network and proximity of three international airports. Vicinity of the cross-border regions and the extreme concentration of natural, cultural and historical heritage makes them perfect location for development of joint tourism product which will be attractive for domestic and international tourists. Modern trends in tourism seek tourism products that overcome state borders and instead offering unique experience. Pelagonija, Florina and Thessaloniki have potentials for providing such experience.

The National Park “Pelister” within this project, realized and provided the following for its visitors:

  • GPS tracking and communication devices, intended for individuals and groups who want to explore the park in all its parts, especially those that are little visited and where there is no other way to communicate. With these devices, the visitor can always determine his position, but also send a signal for help in case of need.
  • tour guide devices – intended for individual use with suitable headphones. They use an audio guide system with manual selection of the recorded material. The user decides for himself in which language he will listen to the information, for which exhibit (according to the number placed on it).
  • Wi-Fi access in places where there is no GSM coverage – in some locations there are self-powered devices that provide free Internet access and use of this application. This is especially important in places where there is no possibility to connect to the mobile network.
  • Simultaneous translation equipment in two languages ​​is installed in the conference hall of the Info Center, so that events with international participation can be held there.
  • two binoculars are placed in attractive locations that can observe nature and life in the park

Usage of all these devices is free, and a request and reservation should be submitted by logging in to this application.

With the funds from this project, an off-road vehicle was procured for the needs of the National Park.
